Locals compete in tennis districts

Elk Lake and Tunkhannock both sent representatives to the District II Class AA girls’ tennis championships at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre on Friday morning.

Elk Lake’s Lindsey Shingler started off the day facing Tunkhannock’s Marlena Chesner in the first round, picking up a 6-2, 6-3 victory to advance to the second round.

Shingler faced Wyoming Seminary’s Anita Ghosh and was bumped from the tournament with a 6-0, 6-4 loss in the second round.

Elk Lake’s Sonya Griffiths advanced past the play in round on Friday with a win over GAR’s Raquel Sosa, 6-0, 6-1, to get a chance at the first round of the competition.

Griffiths then faced Scranton Prep’s Grace Reilly and was eliminated from the competitions with a 6-0, 6-1, loss in the first round.

Tunkhannock Area’s Prutha Patel also competed on Friday winning a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 decision over Berwick’s Erica Robbins in the play-in round to advance.

Patel then squared off against Holy Redeemer’s Fallyn Boich, where she was handed a 6-0, 6-0, loss in the first round to face elimination.

Tunkhannock and Elk Lake’s teams will face off in the first three rounds of the District II Class AA doubles championship at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. If any teams advance, they will play in the semifinals and finals at Kirby Park on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m.

In the opening round Tunkhannock’s Chesner-Becky Mills will face Riverside’s Ashley Fuentz-Kelsey Shaughnessy and Jen Grasso-Morgan Drungell will take on MMI Prep’s Claire Sheen-Latelyn McGuire. Elk Lake’s Danielle Callas-Darci Warner will face Dunmore’s Abigail Aronica-Natasha DeNunzio and Hannah Cave-Taylor Watkins will face Dunmore’s Elisabeth Padula-Anna Notchick.
