Lions stymie Carbondale

CLINTON TWP. – Aggressive and opportunistic, Lackawanna Trail’s defense stole the show.
The 10th-ranked Lions (1-0, 5-1) had four sacks and forced three interceptions en route to a 27-7 win over Carbondale Area in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division III game Friday at Lions Pride Stadium.
After the teams exchanged punts on their opening possessions, Lackawanna Trail put together a 12-play, 68-yard drive while converting three third downs. Jason Guthrie capped the drive with a 9-yard run and the Lions led 6-0.
Carbondale Area (1-1, 2-4) answered back through the air as quarterback Joe Gigliotti went 4 for 4 on a seven-play drive, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jason Martin to give the Chargers a 7-6 lead.
“We were very concerned about their skill kids,” Lackawanna Trail coach Steve Jervis said. “I thought we did a really good job containing them but early on they completed a couple of passes.”
Lackawanna Trail put together another long drive on its next possession, driving 54 yards in 12 plays. Zack Goodrich scored on a 1-yard sneak on fourth down to give Lackawanna Trail a 13-7 lead. The Lions pushed their lead to 21-7 when Jeremy Greenley intercepted a pass and ran 61 yards for a score.
“The quarterback locked on (the receiver) and he didn’t take his eyes off him so I knew exactly where he was going,” Greenley said. “Plus Justin Barber created a lot of penetration which forced him to throw.”
Carbondale Area was stopped on fourth down on its next drive but an interception by Ricky Jones gave the ball back to the Chargers. The Lions got the ball back two plays later when Cooper Rosiak intercepted a pass at his own 40-yard-line. Four plays later, Greenley scored on a 3-yard run.
“I felt our turnovers were the reason we gave them any kind of momentum,” Carbondale Area coach Larry Gabriel III said. “It’s high risk, high reward. We knew we were going to throw the ball a lot tonight. We trusted our quarterback and they made more plays then we did.”
