Playoff picture takes shape

Varsity sports teams from Elk Lake, Lackawanna Trail and Tunkhannock will begin their run into the District II playoffs this week.

Boys’ Basketball

In boys’ Class AA action, Elk Lake enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed after locking down the Lackawanna League Division IV title last week. The Warriors will open playoffs at home on Wednesday against No. 14 seeded Lakeland at 7 p.m.

If they win, the Warriors will face the winner of No. 6 Dunmore and No. 11 Hanover on Saturday.

Lackawanna Trail emerges as the No. 10 seed and will take on No. 7 Riverside at Riverside at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. If the Lions win, they will take on the winner of No. 2 Holy Cross and No. 15 Northwest on Saturday.

In boys’ Class AAA, No. 8 seeded Tunkhannock Area faced No. 9 seed Honesdale at home on Tuesday night. Results were not available at press time. If they win, the Tigers will face the winner of No. 1 seed Abington Heights and No. 16 seed Berwick on Friday night.

Girls’ Basketball

 In girls’ Class AA action, Elk Lake enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed and opened against No. 12 Wyoming Seminary on Tuesday night. Results were not available at press time. If the Warriors win, they will face the winner of No. 4 Dunmore and No. 13 Carbondale on Friday night.

No. 10 seeded Lackawanna Trail faced No. 7 seed Hanover Area on the road Tuesday night. If the Lions win, they will take on the winner of No. 2 GAR and No. 15 Blue Ridge on Friday.

In Class AAA girls’ action, Tunkhannock’s girls lost a play-in game on Saturday to Berwick to be eliminated from action in District II.

Wrestling

On Friday, Elk Lake and Lackawanna Trail will travel to Lake-Lehman High School for the District II Class AA individual championship beginning at 5 p.m. with action resuming on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Tunkhannock Area will travel to Hazleton Area High School for the District II Class AAA individual championship on Friday at 5 p.m. Action also resumes on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Swimming and Diving

Elk Lake and Tunkhannock Area will travel to Wilkes-Barre CYC on Saturday, Feb. 23, to compete in the District II Class AA diving championship starting at 10 a.m.

On Friday, Mar. 1, Elk Lake and Tunkhannock will travel to the Wilkes-Barre CYC to compete in the District II Class AA swimming championship beginning at 12 p.m., and continuing at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 2.
