Ryan Posten hit the gridiron with the Northeast Pennsylvania Miners last weekend as the team began a new season in the Empire Football League.
Posten, 28, a 2003 graduate of Tunkhannock, is playing in his third year on the Miners team, and is an offensive lineman at left guard.
The team finished last year with a 9-3 record in the American Football Association and ended the season with a first round playoff loss.
The Miners played their first game on Saturday at Scranton Memorial Stadium against the western Connecticut Militia.
The team faced a 14-3 loss in the season opener to Western Connecticut, a team that has just four losses in team history.
Despite the loss, the Miners struck first and put three points on the board with a second quarter field goal.
Posten said despite the loss the team is still gunning for the championship this season.
“We’re looking to get the championships, all the way,” Posten said Monday. “We’ve got some new talent in again.”
Posten said the team is looking forward to the new season in the Empire Football League.
“The league is managed better,” Posten said. “And there are a few teams in it that are very talented.”
Posten said the team held its tryouts in March and has been practicing for several months.
Posten said his main personal goal for the season is the continue to get better.
“Personally I just want to keep getting better,” Posten said. “Just keep climbing that ladder.”
Posten said the love of the game keeps him playing.
“I’ll be 29 in July, and to be able to still play football is amazing,” Posten said.
