The Tunkhannock freshman football team held its second annual ‘Lift-a-Thon’ fundraiser in the weight room on Saturday morning to help fund its 2013-2014 season.
Freshman head coach Dan Anderson started the fund raiser last year to help cover the costs of the program, which faced cancellation after budgets cuts for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
Instead of paying to play, the lift-a-thon and a pig raffle fundraiser both help to raise enough money for the upcoming season.
“This year’s lift-a-thon went really well and I was impressed by some of the numbers our players put up,” Anderson said. “We don’t have the final numbers yet but we’ll definitely have enough to fund the season.”
Anderson won’t know how much money the fundraisers collectively raised until players who were unable to attend on Saturday can complete their lifts, but this year’s numbers should exceed last year’s final tally.
The lift-a-thon fundraiser requires team members to get sponsors that will pledge money for each pound lifted.
Sponsors can range from local businesses to family and friends, each of whom can pay per pound or donate a flat-fee.
Each participant completed bench press, squat and dead lifts, either by one single rep or three reps of their maximum weight, depending on their weight lifting experience.
The event allowed some first year players the opportunity to show what they could do in the weight room.
“I was surprised at how well some of our younger players did since this was the first time we really pushed them to their maximum potential,” Anderson said. “It’s important to make sure that we’re teaching them proper lifting techniques early on. We even had a seventh grader squat 275 pounds so we have some impressive lifters.”
Currently, the team is focusing on conditioning as summer practices move into August. Practices with pads will begin on Aug. 12.
