Recent Tunkhannock Area grad Ben Spencer will swim on the national stage this coming weekend as the State Games of America come to Pennsylvania.
They coincide with the annual Keystone State Games, where Spencer had great success two years ago while breaking three meet records at York Central High School’s natatorium.
The swimming portion of the State Games of America also will be at Central York High School with warmups and competitions set for Aug. 1-2.
Spencer will compete in the 200 individual medley, 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke.
Spencer said last week, “I’m ready,” and noted that he has been training all summer with the swim team from Dallas, putting in two hours a day in the pool, Monday through Friday, and running on dry land for an hour a day.
The Clarion University-bound Spencer said he was looking forward to the State Games of America, and also “can’t wait” to compete at the college level where he acknowledges the pace will definitely be a lot faster.
At last year’s AAU Junior Olympics in Houston, Texas, Spencer took gold in the 200 backstroke and second in the 200IM for boys, 15-18.
