The Bob Horlacher 10-11-year-old Girls Softball Team all-stars swept the first three games of Eastern Pennsylvania pool play to earn a spot in last night’s state Little League semifinals in Exton.
The girls from Beaumont were to face West Point, and a win puts them in today’s state championship final at 5 p.m. against the winner of the other state semifinal between Exton and Montoursville.
(This paper went to press before the semifinals were over.)
The Horlacher girls opened pool play at Campbell Field, just north of Philadelphia Saturday with a convincing 5-1 win over Warrington.
Mackayla Quick went two-for-three and Hope Jones came on in relief of to pitch four no-hit innings with six strikeouts.
In the sixth inning, Kaci Coole had aan RBI double and Faith Jones added a run-scoring single.
On Sunday, threatening skies laced with rain and thunder seemed to be Horlacher’s biggest nemesis as it began a game against Oxford. The game was suspended after five innings.
It resumed Monday morning at 10:30 a.m.
In that game, Hope Jones went two-for-two to lead Horlacher to an 8-1 win. Delaney Romanchick struck out eight to earn the win.
Then late Monday afternoon, Horlacher faced host Exton and completed pool play with a 3-2 win.
Faith Jones went three-for-three and Mackayla Quick earned the victory.
If yesterday’s game seemed like a bit of déjà vu for both teams, there was good reason.
As 9-10 girls, both Horlacher and West Point played for the state championship almost a year ago to the day, with Horlacher bringing home the state title over host West Point, 2-1.
Last night they were on a neutral field.
The 10-11 girls represent Monroe, Northmoreland and Noxen townships of Wyoming County in the Bob Horlacher League which plays in Little League District 31. That district includes most of the communities in the Wyoming Valley.
Eight of the 10 girls attend Tunkhannock Area Middle School.
