Gasoline prices across Wyoming County jumped across November, a survey of all 18 service stations in the county revealed this past weekend.

The average price for 87 octane, jumped 8.8 cents to $2.735 a gallon from the $2.647 consumers paid in the county five weeks ago, a survey of Wyoming County’s service stations on Dec. 2-3, revealed.

This past weekend’s county average was 25.6 cents more than the national average price for 87-octane on Sunday of $2.479 and 1.5 cents below the Pennsylvania average of $2.750.

The average price for 89-octane increased 7.3 cents to $2.955 a gallon from the $2.882 average of five weeks ago.

The average price of 93-octane locally on the weekend was $3.222. That is 8.6 cents above the $3.136 average of five weeks ago.

According to statistics compiled by the American Automobile Association, a year ago 87-octane sold at a national average price of $2.177 a gallon. One month ago, it was $2.517.

According to AAA, gas prices bumped upwards during the first two weeks of November and are now falling. But, the average price for retail gasoline historically declines from fall into winter due to a number of factors including decreased demand.

Conventional wisdom says that the costs tend to reflect the volatility of the crude oil market where a barrel of crude traded for $58.36 on Friday. That was actually up $4.50 a barrel from one month earlier.

Regardless, the price of a barrel of crude is still around 40 percent of the peak price in the summer of 2008 of $147 a barrel.

A national record high for 87-octane of $4.114 was established on July 17, 2008. A state record high of $4.074 was established on July 16, 2008.

In January 2009, the average price of a gallon of 87-octane in Wyoming County was $1.701. That was the lowest price level since the Wyoming County Press Examiner began monitoring it in January 2005.
