A 27-year-old Tunkhannock man will face at least four months in county jail after being sentenced last Wedensday in the Wyoming County Court of Common Pleas for assaulting his mother this past summer.

Attorney Jair Novajosky told President Judge Russell Shurtleff that his client, Steven Andrew Lane, was remorseful for what happened on July 21.

Lane said, “I wish that I could take it back and I want to be a better individual.”

Before sentencing, his mother, Susan Lane, asked to address the court.

“What he did to me was unbelievable,” she said while describing a choking scene and later bruises on arms, thighs and legs.

“He told me he was going to kill me, and I really believed he wanted to kill me,” she said.

“The fear that he instilled in me I never thought I could endure,” she added, noting there have been periods when she couldn’t eat or sleep.

“I love my son, and miss him,” but she said, “he tore my heart into pieces. I can’t believe a son would do this to his own mother. I just ask that no one else ever have to feel what I have.”

Before she stepped down from the witness stand, Judge Shurtleff asked if she were made aware of the plea bargain in the case, where charges of terroristic threats and harassment were removed in lieu of the single count of simple assault.

She said she was. “I love my son, and in time I want to have a relationship with him. But, it’s not going to be easy.”

District Attorney Jeff Mitchell said he would ask that a mental health evaluation be added to whatever sentence Lane received.

The judge concurred and added it “with a full recovery treatment plan” to a sentence of 120 days-18 months in county jail, with credit for 85 days already served.
