JAMES BURNSIDE

A 21-year-old Laceyville man could face as much as 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine after pleading no contest Friday to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child sometime between Jan. 1 and Feb. 16.

James Edward Burnside, of Main Street, appeared before Wyoming County President Judge Russell Shurtleff who told him he also must be assessed by the sexual offenders assessment board with possible lifetime registration as a sexual predator under Megan’s Law.

Court records indicate that Wyoming County Children and Youth Services opened an investigation after a 15-year-old female accused Burnside of groping her breasts over her shirt.

Further investigation by state police alleged that Burnside also victimized two boys under the age of 13.

According to a criminal complaint, Burnside told police that he and the alleged victims were “messing around” and “I knew better, but I went with it.”

The judge clarified Friday that Burnside’s nolo contendre (or no contest) plea neither admitted nor denied the facts in the case.

“Is that your understanding?” Shurtleff asked.

Burnside nodded his head and then said, “Yes.”

He has been in the county jail since Feb. 17, in lieu of $50,000 bail.
