PAUL SCRANTA

A 51-year-old Factoryville man was sentenced to four and a half to nine years in state prison on charges related to an indecent assault against a minor last May.

Paul Joseph Scranta, 51, of German Hill Road, Factoryville, has been housed in the Wayne County jail for 250 days, and when given an opportunity to speak on his behalf, both he and his attorney Steve Franko had no comment.

Assistant district attorney Jerry Idec asked for the maximum sentence.

Judge Russell Shurtleff said that Scranta has had a 37-year record with the criminal justice system and noted that his most recent brush with the law - a rape conviction from the Nineties - landed him in the state prison for 20 years because he would not seek sexual offender rehabilitation.

He gets released and look what happens within a year and a half, the judge said.

Court records note that in the early morning of May 5, 2015, Scranta indecently assaulted a sleeping juvenile female in a downstairs bed by kissing her midsection, hips, and thighs.

The juvenile told police she awoke around 3 a.m. to someone kissing her midsection under the covers of the bed. When she moved the covers back, she recognized Scranta’s face and related that her legging pants were pulled down to her thighs, and she jumped out of bed screaming. The juvenile ran into the living room and Scranta followed her.

Scranta was sentenced to 42-84 months in state prison and a $1,000 fine for criminal trespass and to 12-24 months in state prison and a $1,000 fine for indecent assault.

He said the Factoryville man also faced lifetime registration as a sexually violent predator.

The judge said that if the court were to issue any less of a sentence, it would diminish the seriousness of the crime, and noted he continues to remain a threat to society.
