BRUCE CAREY

A 29-year-old Pittston man could face as much as 27 years in prison after pleading guilty Friday in Wyoming County to child sex charges after authorities claimed he communicated inappropriate information separately to a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old female.

Bruce J. Carey of Morgan Lane was told by President Judge Russell Shurtleff that on the one plea of criminal solicitation of statutory sexual assault on a 13-year-old, he could face lifetime registration as a sexually violent predator under the Adam Walsh Act, and for corruption of minors dealing with a 14-year-old, he could face 15-year registration.

“Do you understand the consequences and ramifications of your plea?” Judge Shurtleff asked.

“Yes sir,” Carey said.

According to court records Carey is alleged to have exchanged pictures with the two Tunkhannock Area Middle School girls using instant messenger software applications known as Kik and Whisper via a tablet or cell phone.

Both teens alleged to authorities that they received explicit verbal messages that were “highly sexual in nature” from Carey, as well as nude photos of himself to both girls.

He initially told the girls via his messaging conversations that he was 17, even though he was actually 29.

At some point the conversations made it clear he was aware the girls were 13 and 14.

In both cases, the girls were asked for pictures, and the older one noted, “I figured that if I sent one he would stop asking. And that was not the case, It only made him ask for more.”

Judge Shurtleff ordered a review of Carey by the sex offenders assessment board, and said he would be sentenced at a later date.
