A 27-year-old Tunkhannock man, whose car went airborne one morning in the summer of 2014 before landing in a stream bank of the Tunkhannock Creek, was sentenced to 133 days-23 and a half months in the Wyoming County Court of Common Pleas last Wednesday.

Christopher Bernard Mazzarella was also fined $3,500 for two DUI’s - one of which led to the 2014 incident in which a minor was on board – and for an unrelated simple assault.

Court records and video footage revealed that on Aug. 26, 2014, Mazzarella’s car passed three vehicles on the right before entering a Tunkhannock Township intersection near Dunkin’ Donuts where U.S. Route 6 Bypass and State Route 92 intersect. There, the vehicle continued off the roadway before landing on its passenger side in a stream bank.

Mazzarella refused treatment at the time. A 13-year-old was treated at Tyler Hospital for minor injuries.

For one DUI, he faced three days-five and a half months in county jail, and for the second, involving a controlled substance, he faced 90 days to 12 months in county jail followed by four years of probation.

Mazzarella also was sentenced to 1-6 months in county jail for simple assault in a separate 2014 incident in which he attacked his brother with a claw hammer.
