The Lackawanna Trail School Board approved changes in this year’s school calendar and changes to next year’s calendar in its regular meeting Monday (Apr. 10).
Lackawanna Trail School Superintendent Matthew Rakauskas hads proposed amending the 2016-2017 school calendar to include June 12 through the 16th as make-up days for days lost to Winter Storm Stella. He also proposes to reschedule this year’s graduation for Tuesday, June 13.
Superintendent Matthew Rakauskas also discussed two recently posted job opportunities in the district, one for a dean of students, the other for a school nurse.
The dean of students position, Rakauskas said, will be “a teaching position” which will be advertised until April 28. Interviews will following and Rakauskas said he hopes to fill the position by early June.
Besides instruction, the position will involve “a combination of administrative tasks” including student discipline and attendance.
“The dean would essentially work more days than the average teacher,” Rakauskas said, saying that the dean could end up working a total of 10 additional days each school year, perhaps five days before school begins and five days after the end of the school year.
The position is covered in the teacher’s contract.
“We’re very optimistic that it’s a good fit. It should be economical,” he said.
Prior to the board’s regular meeting the board met in executive session to discuss the nurse’s position.
The district will continue seeking reimbursement for help with clean up costs in the wake of Winter Storm Stella. The district’s clean up costs amounted to $5,115.91.
In other actions, the board formally approved several items previously discussed during its work session earlier this month:
*Appointed Sweet, Stevens, Katz, Williams (John G. Audi) as the school solicitor.
*Approved the agreement between the board and the Wyoming County Juvenile Court for contracted services for the 2017-2018 school year at a cost of $13,500.
