‘Wreaths across America’ targets vets

As part of a nationwide effort called ‘Wreaths across America,’ Robert Williams last December laid a wreath of departed veteran and friend George Wisnosky at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Area funeral homes will once again sponsor a bus trip for veterans from the Endless Mountains region to Harrisburg as part of a nationwide ‘Wreaths across America' project on Dec. 8.

Tom Kukuchka, past president of the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, said that a bus will pick veterans up that day at 7 a.m. in Black Walnut and 7:30 a.m. in Tunkhannock, and transport them to Harrisburg for a wreath-laying service at the State Capitol as a day of remembrance for departed veterans.

This year, Sen. Lisa Baker, R-Lehman Twp.; Rep.  Sandra Major, R-Bridgewater; and Rep. Karen Boback, R-Harveys Lake will host the participants to a lunch following the service.

After lunch, the veterans will be taken on a tour of area museums.

Kukuchka said that seats will be available to the first 40 veterans to sign up, and they may do so by contacting their local American Legion post.

It is all part of a nationwide effort to place wreaths on the graves of thousands of veterans across the nation.

David Deaner of Stoystown is the current PFDA president.
