A Tunkhannock Area High School teacher is accused of threatening children with a gun outside his Luzerne County home.
Gerald J. Wiernusz, 41, of 133 W. Vaughn St., Kingston, was charged on Thursday, June 18, with making terroristic threats, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.
According to the complaint filed by Kingston Police Officer Michael Krzywicki, two juveniles were playing basketball in a nearby park when they heard Wiernusz yelling. They thought there was a fight at his house.
The juveniles approached Wiernusz's home and saw him sitting on the porch. Wiernusz offered alcohol to the two, but they refused and started to walk away.
At that time, the report says, Wiernusz went inside and returned with a silver-barreled firearm with a long barrel. He started to waive it at the youths, and threatened to shoot them if they came onto his property. Wiernusz then walked around his car, which was parked in the driveway, while calling the juveniles offensive names and clucking like a chicken.
Police went to Wiernusz's home and found him in the backyard. According to police, he was highly intoxicated.
Wiernusz reportedly told police his actions were in revenge for an incident a few nights earlier. He said his children were playing basketball in the street when a vehicle came by at high speed and stopped at his neighbor's home. Wiernusz said he argued with the driver and told him to slow down.
According to the report, at the time of the incident he is charged for, Wiernusz was sitting on his porch having a few beers when he saw the people from the first incident. He began to yell profanities to get their attention. As they approached his home, he said he went inside and got his gun, which he has a permit for.
Wiernusz repeatedly told police he was acting in retaliation, and that he has a right to defend himself, his family and his property. He refused to allow police into his home to get the firearm, and threatened to harm anyone who came into his house.
Wiernusz's preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for Monday, has been continued until July 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Central Court in Wilkes-Barre.
