Going into his final heat in the 100 butterfly at districts on Friday, Kupchunas wasn't sure what to expect.

The Tiger swimmer seemed to glide above the water as he made his way down the pool like a rocket to beat out seven other swimmers in the heat.

<img height="215" width="350" src="http://wcexaminer.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.21.21.Examiner+Mar+10+2010/ELAdamP200IM.jpg" alt="Elk Lake’s Adam Phillips took second place in the 200 individual medley in the District II Class AA finals in Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
One of those swimmers being Dallas' Brandon Harding, who Kupchunas said has been tough to beat in the past.

Kupchunas, seeded second, beat out Holy Redeemer's Connor Boyle, who was the race's top seed.

As his hands touched the plate at the end of the race, and looked up, his eyes lit up like a spark.

"I couldn't believe it," Kupchunas said. "I was really happy."

Lackawanna Trail's Eric Laytos wanted to make school history.

And with grit and determination, he accomplished that goal.

On Saturday at Williamsport High School, Laytos brought home a Northeast Regional wrestling title - the first for the program - and advanced to next week's PIAA Class AA Championships in Hershey starting Thursday, Mar. 11, and concluding Mar. 13, at the Giant Center.

For Laytos, who defeated his rival Jacob Eastman from Elk Lake to claim the 215-pound District 2 gold last week, his title was the first in his school's history by defeating Todd Hall from Athens, 9-4.

"It feels great," said the sophomore, who is heading to states with a record of 37-6. "It's nice to have your own title for something. No one at Trail has ever done that before. It's a real accomplishment."

Laytos began his quest Saturday with a 7-1 win over Nick Dawson of Montoursville in the semifinals.

"I wanted to win," Laytos said. "I wanted to win every match. I knew I could do that with the way I've been practicing and coming out of winning districts."

Elk Lake wrestlers competing in regionals had their time cut short, with all Warrior wrestlers losing their first round matches.

Tiger Ray Yagloski (112) won his first match in the preliminaries against Matthew Valentin of Stroudsburg, 8-4, but fell in the quarterfinals and in the consolation quarterfinals.

Tunkhannock's Kevin Packer (125) and Charlie Generotti (135) both lost their first matches and were then eliminated after losses in the first-round consolation matches.

Tunkhannock finished 23rd in the team standings with 12 points while Blue Mountain was tops with 108 points.

Times-Shamrock Writer

CARBONDALE - For one half, a scrappy Lackawanna Trail team had Dunmore on its heels.

But the Bucks turned up the pressure in the second half and subdued the upset-minded Lions, 68-45, in the District 2 Class AA boys basketball quarterfinals Tuesday at Carbondale Area High School.

Mike Ehnot and Pat Ross each had 19 points and Jake Rowland added 18 for second-seeded Dunmore (21-4), which advances to Thursday's semifinals against GAR. The sixth-seeded Grenadiers beat No. 3 seed Montrose, 63-55, in the first game of the doubleheader at Carbondale.

Trailing 13-5, Trail settled down and scored the final seven points of the first quarter. Then, getting the ball inside to 6-foot-10 sophomore Steve Miller (7 second-quarter points), the Lions took a 23-22 lead with 3:09 left in the second.

Dunmore led at halftime, 26-22, but a 3-pointer by Bobby Pacholec and a three-point play Sean Fricke put Trail on top, 29-28, with 6:49 left in the third.

That's when the Bucks' defense took over.

"Instead of a full-court press, we went to a half-court press and were trapping on the wings," Dunmore coach Tony Lacertoso said. "They had a difficult time getting the ball to Miller. That kind of gave us an advantage. We got some turnovers and some key scores from it."

Trail committed eight turnovers in the third quarter and attempted just six shots from the field. And, Miller did not touch the ball for the first time in the second half until 1:39 was left in the third.

As a result, Dunmore built a 44-35 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Rowland had a three-point play and two assists in the opening two minutes of the fourth as the Bucks scored the first seven points of the quarter to put the game away.

Pacholec finished with 15 points for Trail (16-8) and Miller wound up with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Lackawanna Trail finished off the season with a 16-8 overall record.

Tunkhannock lacrosse ready for new season

<img height="341" width="450" src="http://wcexaminer.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.21.21.Examiner+Mar+10+2010/steve-brennan.jpg" alt="Tunkhannock lacrosse player Steve Brennan looks for an open teammate during a Tiger game with Danville last season.
BY KEVIN WOODRUFF

Wyoming County Press Examiner

The Tiger varsity boys' lacrosse team is ready for its first year as an official sport at Tunkhannock Area.

Coach Joe Appolonia said that he, along with the team, is excited about the upcoming year.

"The team looks really good," Appolonia said on Monday. "We are really excited about the new season."

After returning its entire lineup from last year with the exception of Dave White and Teddy Lane, who were lost to graduation, the Tigers are bolstering some experience.

Tunkhannock finished up last year with a season record of 9-3, and Appolonia is hoping the Tigers can keep up the intensity.

"We would like to continue to finish strong, and bring up the tempo a little bit this year," Appolonia said.

With two new teams added to the Tigers' league new challenges will be posed to Tunkhannock.

"Harrisburg Academy and Delaware Valley are entering the league this year," Appolonia said. "They are two pretty tough clubs.

We just have to play tough from the time of the whistle until the game's over."

In addition to Harrisburg and Delaware Valley, Appolonia said that State College and Lewisburg are two other tough teams in the Nittany Lacrosse League which also consists of Bellefonte, Selinsgrove, Dallas, Danville and Mifflinburg.

With the Tigers' schedule this season, they will have little preseason time to prepare.

"We have two to three games every week of the season," Appolonia said. "That doesn't give us a whole lot of time to prepare before the season starts."

Tunkhannock begins this Saturday (Mar. 13) with a scrimmage at Lewisburg at noon.

Appolonia said that in addition to focusing on the varsity program, Tunkhannock will also work to build its youth programs.

"We're trying to recruit coaches and make sure the feeder program is strong," Appolonia said. "There's a lot that needs to be done."

The captains for Tunkhannock's team this year will be seniors Jeff Krishak, Steve Harris, Levi Corby and sophomore Joe Appolonia.

Appolonia's assistant varsity coach this season will be Eric Janeski and volunteer assistants will be Don Hull and Bob Faux.

The Tunkhannock Area varsity lacrosse team is comprised of seniors Steve Brennan, Levi Corby, Steve Harris, Carl Jenkins, Chad Katra, Jeff Krishak, Jordan Poindexter, Zack Rosengrant, Joe Shook and Dylan Smith, juniors Nik Atkins, Dan Ayers, Nate Ayers, Chris Faux, Dustin Frisbie, John Kania, Jonathan King, Justin Ly, Tanner Nystrand, Nate Rogers, Randy Salus, Zack Simmers and Hayden Underwood, sophomore Joe Appolonia and freshmen Joe Cordero, Shane Ely, Austin Ely, Jensen Healey, Anthony Marturano, Liam McClurg, Kyle Mortimer, Tim Nerozzi, Nathan Nystrand, Alex Phillips, Taylor Ray, Cory Valvano and Owen Weisenflutt.

Full schedule:

Mar. 29, Delaware Valley, A, 7 p.m.

In an upcoming book from Roth, he discusses his roots and his time playing for Trail. " style="float:right;border:1px solid black;margin:3px;" />

BY KEVIN WOODRUFF

Wyoming County Press Examiner

Yogi Roth is taking a look back at his roots in an upcoming book release.

Roth, a 2000 Lackawanna Trail graduate, who went on to walk on for the University of Pittsburgh football team and later coach for the University of Southern California, is looking to give people a snapshot at his journey so far.

He said that the book will focus on his time at Pittsburgh, USC and starting off at Lackawanna Trail.

"It's about my career," Roth said on Thursday. "It's focused on the people who impacted where I am today."

Roth said that he has always thought of himself as a writer, going back to his days writing for Lackawanna Trail's high school newspaper.

And having a master's degree in communication sure doesn't hurt either.

The title is currently set to be "Do You Love It? The Best Four Years of my Life," which Roth said could change before the book's release in the fall of 2010.

Roth's idea for the book stemmed from when he was still coaching in his last year at USC.

"There was a professor I knew pretty well, and knowing that it was my last year, I approached her and asked if I could write a book about it," Roth said. "I thought that I could capture pretty well what it was like being a graduate assistant."

He said the book takes the reader through his final season at USC, but starts back in Dalton playing football for the Lions.

"It's by no means a tell-all book," Roth said. "But it highlights some of the kids I grew up with."

He said that when he was growing up, he remembers Trail always being known as a team with heart that always lost.

"That killed me growing up," Roth said. "But when I was a part of the program, things changed."

One memory Roth recalls in his book goes back to a game against Western Wayne which the Lions lost by two points after what Roth considered a bad move.

"I remember walking back to the locker room and one of my teammates saying ‘well at least it was close,'" Roth said. "And I just freaked out on the guy.

I've always said, you show me a good loser, and I'll show you a permanent one."

The book is set to be released by KMD Publishing, out of Baltimore, which Roth said publishes a lot of educational material.

He said they are an up-and-coming publisher, headed up by Lackawanna Trail graduate Jim Kowatch.

Right now, Roth is working through the final draft of the book, and hopes to get the book out before the beginning of the 2010 football season.

In addition to working on his book, Roth is still working for ESPN and Fox College Sports as a college football analyst and on-screen personality.

Roth said that he is really excited about the book, and hopes that it tells a good story.

"I hope it's relatable to people," Roth said. "A lot of people grow up in small towns, and hopefully this connects with them."

Cougars upset 11th-ranked Keystone Giants

Two college baseball teams less than 30 miles apart had to travel all the way to Florida to tone up their baseball muscles.

But the change of scenery was not to Keystone College's liking as Misericordia shocked the 11th-ranked NCAA Div. 3 Giants, 9-4, Saturday with big rallies in the sixth and eighth innings in Winter Haven.

MU pitcher Jamie Philippi allowed just two runs in seven innings of work, while at the plate Chris Tuttle was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, and Jeff Slanovec hit 2-for-4 in his first start.

For Keystone, Ryan Smyth went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Angel Fargas also had 2 RBIs

With the game scoreless in the sixth, Nate Hamlin singled, then advanced on a wild pitch before being sacrificed over. Nate Newman, Slanovec and Brian Verdelli then ran off consecutive hits to stake the Cougars a 3-0 advantage.

A two-run homer by Smyth in the seventh pulled Keystone back into the game, and a double by Andy Vega put the tying run in scoring position for the Giants with no outs.

Vega reached third on a sacrifice but the Cougars kept their upset hopes alive with a huge double play. Tuttle was bowled over at the plate but he held onto to the ball, and to MU's slim one-run lead.

Misericordia rallied for five runs in the eighth, starting with a double by Slanovec and a triple by Philippi. Keystone pitcher Brian Stern walked two straight Cougar batters to allow the deluge to continue.

Keystone tried to come back in the ninth with a double by Smyth, a walk to Eddie Frias and a double Fargas, but it wasn't enough.

Jeff Frost of Freehold, N.J., took the loss for the Giants. Neither Montrose grad Sean Brewer or former Lion Brad Higgins saw action in the Giants' 2010 opener.

Van Duzer coaching Allegheny swimmers

BY KEVIN WOODRUFF

Wyoming County Press Examiner

Tunkhannock graduate and former swimmer Steve Van Duzer has gone from competing at Hartwick College to coaching for the Allegheny College Gator swimming program.

Van Duzer, 23, now of Meadville, said that he didn't graduate into the best job market after receiving a degree in English from Hartwick, and decided to use his knowledge of swimming to pursue career opportunities.

"Program wise, Allegheny is national caliber," Van Duzer said on Thursday. "They have a good strong history in the sport."

He said that this year the women's team took fifth in the North Coast Athletic Conference while the men's team finished fourth.

"The NCAC is a powerhouse conference," Van Duzer said. "Taking third there is like winning any other conference."

He said he was hoping for higher finishes for both teams, but it was a rough year.

"The women had a bit of a rough year," Van Duzer said. "But the men went from sixth last year to fourth this year."

Van Duzer said that the transition from a NCAA Division III competitor to a coach in was a smooth transition.

"It was a pretty easy transition," Van Duzer said. "Because I was always the kind of swimmer that spent a lot of time examining myself."

He said that the biggest transition for him was getting into the role of an assistant.

"The biggest thing for me was easing into the assistant coaching role," Van Duzer said. "It's tough being a young assistant coach."

However, he said being that head coach Danielle Lindner is close in age to him, it made it easier to see eye-to-eye.

"We're a young team athletically, and coaching wise," Van Duzer said.

On the deck, Van Duzer said that one aspect of coaching that is very important to him is the idea of consistency.

"For me as an athlete and a coach, being consistent is important," Van Duzer said. "As an athlete I was always there ready to do the work, and I do the same thing as a coach."

He said that even if athletes want off days, he isn't likely to comply.

"When I swam I didn't allow myself to have off days," Van Duzer said. "And I expect the same out of my athletes."

Van Duzer said that the opportunity to coach at Allegheny is great.

In the future, he feels that coaching is something he will continue to explore.

"Right now I'm really excited about coaching," Van Duzer said. "And it's something I think I'll continue to do."

He said in the future, he will seek head coaching or graduate assistant coaching jobs, in order to obtain a master's degree.

But for now, he is content where he is, and doesn't have a problem selling the Allegheny program to potential new swimmers.

"A big part of my job as an assistant is to recruit new swimmers," Van Duzer said. "And Allegheny is so far ahead of the rest in academics that I have no problem selling it."

He said that many of the swimmers on the team are pre-med, pre-law or pre-dental.

Though he is in a new environment at Allegheny, Van Duzer said the atmosphere at Allegheny is a good fit.

"It's a lot like Tunkhannock, a little bigger, but the atmosphere is similar," Van Duzer said. "It's been a smooth transition."

Tiger pair in All-Star Classic

TYWC took nine wrestlers to Williamsport on Sunday for the PJW Area Ten Championships, with Rosiak coming out the only representative to qualify for the PJW State Championships to be held on March 26 and 27 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre.

To get there, Rosiak dominated his semi-final round opponent before falling short in the finals match of the tournament. His second place finish qualifies him for the trip to the state competition as only the top two finishers in this tournament qualify.

Rosiak will meet up against about 20 other top wrestlers his age and weight in the state.

As mentioned, eight other TYWC wrestlers competed in the Area Ten Championship Tournament as well. Tommy Traver came up just short of qualifying for states, finishing in third place with a 3-1 record on the day.

David Gavek had the next best day, finishing fourth. Other grapplers doing their best on the day as they faced their toughest competition of the year were Dalton Ray, Connor Munley, Lucas Stage, Owen Woods, Elliot Hammersley and Justin Kozlansky. Congratulations to all these youth wrestlers on some gutsy performances.

In other youth wrestling over the weekend, several future stars took place in the Abington Rookie Tournament, held for wrestlers in their first or second year.

TYWC had five first place finishers on the day including Nathan Wilmarth, Nick Wilmarth, Brian Christ, Eddie Melan, and Breanna Weidner. Coming in second were Timmy Davenport, Jacob Davenport, and Jacob MacMillan. The youth grapplers also brought home two third place finishers in Gavin D'Amato and Kurtis Christ. Fourth place finishers included Ethan Munley and Ziggy Rezykowski. Rounding out the competitors for the day and wrestling tough were Leo Mayeski and Hunter Gregory.

A special thank-you goes out to Coach Gary Thatcher and all the TYWC family members who helped out with coaching and organizing on the day as all the other coaches attended the PJW Tournament on the same day.

Also, four TYWC grapplers took to the mats on Saturday at Elk Lake High School for a round robin tournament. Dakota Quick brought home the only first place finish, pinning two opponents on his way. Hunter Gregory took third place, while Timmy Davenport brought home a fourth place finish. Breanna Weidner also attended, but was unable to find anyone brave enough to wrestle this tough rookie.

Weekly Scores (Mar. 10, 2010)

Results for Mar. 2-8:

A trio of Elk Lake wrestlers along with Lackawanna Trail's Eric Laytos captured gold at last week's PIAA District II Class AA championships in which the Warriors were team co-champs.

They tied for first place in team points with Western Wayne at 178, which also had three champs like Elk Lake did with Keaton Bennett (125), Devin Fiorentino (130) and Brandon Cleveland (189).

But not all Warriors were so lucky.

Trail's Laytos avenged an earlier season loss from Warrior Jacob Eastman at 215-pounds to take the Lions' only gold with a 6-1 decision.

Trail's Matt Mugford took third place defeating Dallas' Anthony McDermott by pin in 3:58 and the Lions will send two wrestlers to regionals as the top three from each weight class make the trip.

Elk Lake's Warriors will send a total of eight wrestlers to the regional competition in Williamsport on Friday.

"We had a bunch of holes in the middle, but we're sending those eight to regionals," Elk Lake coach Wes Warner said. "We really try to preach teamwork. ‘Always as a team.'

"Our kids really stepped up. I have great kids.

Elk Lake had sole possession of first place going into finals Sunday. Warner said with Devon Maye's overtime victory over Valley View's Pete Santarelli at 119 on Saturday night.

Maye finished second to Wyoming Area's Andy Schutz in the final, falling in a 5-1 decision, but his semifinal victory gave the Warriors a second wind, making them ready to wrestle and to hold off Western Wayne.

Wildcats junior Josh Harrison and Elk Lake senior Tyler McCauley went scoreless through two periods at 160 before Harrison scored a point 10 seconds into the final period to win a 1-0 decision.

Two bouts later, Elk Lake senior Brandon Cleveland built up a lead against Matt Rosensweet in the first two periods. Rosensweet made a few moves lat in the final period, but Cleveland won by an 8-4 decision.

"I know going into the match we were in first in points," Cleveland said. "If I could just win this bout, I could keep us up there. We're big rivals (with Western Wayne), and they beat us in the league, but we want to beat them in the district."

Elk Lake's Bennett beat Dallas' Brian DeLuca 4-1 in the finals to win district gold.

Fiorentino (130) battled his way to the finals where he beat Wyoming Area's Tristan Vanderlick 10-3 to take the win. <img height="311" width="450" src="http://wcexaminer.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.21.21.Examiner+Mar+3+2010/ELWRES-Keaton-Bennett.jpg" alt="Elk Lake’s Keaton Bennett was tops at the District II Class AA championship defeating Dallas’ Brian DeLuca in the finals of the 125-pound weight class.
Elk Lake's Devon Maye (119) lost by decision to Wyoming Area's Andrew Schultz to take second, while Tyler McCauley of Elk Lake was defeated by Western Wayne's Josh Harrison and took second.

Warrior Josh Ralston was handed a 4-2 loss from Meyers' Anthony Gibson in the finals.
