The Elk Lake baseball team won its first two games of the season to improve to 2-1 in Division IV in the Lackawanna League.
The Warriors won 11-5 at Susquehanna on Monday afternoon after edging Montrose, 9-3, on Thursday.
At Susquehanna, Elk Lake tied the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the third, then broke things open with three runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Senior Zach Groover belted a home run, doubled, singled, drove in three runs and scored twice to lead the Warriors.
Also for Elk Lake, senior Brandon Traver doubled and scored, senior Blake Chew picked up a hit, drove in two runs and scored twice, freshman Alex Bradish scored three times and junior Caleb Ely singled, drove in a run and scored.
Sophomore Nate Pettyjohn picked up the win, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking five in five innings.
Against Montrose, both teams scored two runs in the first inning before the Warriors pulled ahead 5-3 with three runs in the bottom of the third.
Elk Lake would then put the game out of reach with a rally in the sixth that brought in four runs.
Junior Jack Waldenburger belted three hits and scored twice, sophomore Kevin Valvano had two hits and also scored twice, sophomore Joe McAleer drove in three runs and scored twice, Groover doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice and Traver had two hits, drove in two runs and scored to lead the Warriors.
The top four hitters in the Elk Lake lineup combined for eight of the team’s nine hits.
Ely picked up the win, allowing five hits and three unearned runs while striking out four in five innings.
Groover struck out one and walked one in two scoreless innings of relief.
