With the regular season wrapping up this week, the Tunkhannock Area boys basketball team helped its cause toward clinching a spot in the District 2 playoffs with two victories in its last three games.

Before a 65-49 setback to Dallas on Saturday night, the Tigers held on the beat Meyers 49-39 on Friday night and edged GAR 60-55 on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The wins improved Tunkhannock’s record to 8-7 in Division 2 of the Wyoming Valley Conference and to 11-9 overall.

Regarding the postseason, the top four teams are way out in front when it comes to their power ratings, a system that awards points based on overall winning percentage and quality of wins.

Current standings as of Sunday night were Scranton Prep and Nanticoke Area battling for seeds No. 1 and 2, while Wyoming Area and Valley View were next up.

Hanover Area, Tunkhannock, Honesdale and Meyers were currently the next four teams in for the eight-team tournament, with Berwick, GAR and Western Wayne on the outside looking in.

Against Dallas, Tunkhannock trailed 17-15 after the opening quarter before cooling off in the second with eight points to head into halftime down 29-22.

In the third, the Mountaineers held off a run by the Tigers to outscore their opponent, 21-18, then held Tunkhannock to nine points in the final quarter to pick up the win.

Junior Tyler Faux knocked down five 3-pointers and led the Tigers with 17 points, while seniors Sean Harder and Matt Goodwin each chipped in with nine.

As of Monday, Faux leads all of the Wyoming Valley Conference with 64 3-pointers for the season.

On Friday night, the Tigers took some time to get going on the offensive end and headed into the half holding a 20-18 lead.

In the third, Tunkhannock extended its lead to four before pulling away with a 17-point quarter to close out the game.

Harder scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Tigers and Faux chipped in with 13 points.

At GAR, Tunkhannock took an early 18-11 lead before the Grenadiers turned the tables and made a run in the second quarter to pull ahead 29-27 by halftime.

GAR extended its lead to three heading into the final quarter, but the Tigers responded, outscoring their opponent 17-9 en route to the win.

Faux scorched the nets for six 3-pointers and a game-high 27 points to lead Tunkhannock, while Harder added 11 points in the close victory.

Tunkhannock played at Nanticoke Area (17-3) on Tuesday and will close out the regular season by hosting Berwick (9-11) on senior night Thursday evening.
