The Tunkhannock Area Junior High wrestling team saw 10 of its 11 wrestlers place en route to a third place finish at the Wyoming Valley Conference Junior High Wrestling Championships Saturday at Pittston Area.

Coughlin crowned six champions, had eight finalists and ended with 12 total medalists for 208.50 points and a first-place finish in a tournament that included 18 weights ranging from 75-250 pounds.

The Crusaders finished 11 points ahead of second-place Hazleton Area (197.5), while the Tigers managed 155 points in third.

Those two runners-up were part of a three-way tie for the WVC’s regular-season title at the varsity level this season.

Tunkhannock had six wrestlers reach the finals, with two grapplers leaving as champions.

Owen Woods won the championship at 80 pounds and Nick Marabell won at 155 pounds to lead the Tigers.

After a bye in the quarters, Woods pinned Berwick’s Deartick Moyer in 35 seconds before pinning Valley West’s Dylan Grannahan in 57 seconds in the finals.

He finished the season with a 20-1 record.

Marabell pinned his opponent in 1:16 in the quarterfinal bout before pinning Lake-Lehman’s Ethan Adams in 32 seconds in the semifinals.

In the championship match, Marabell battled to an 11-6 decision over Hanover’s Hunter Karpovich for the title that capped off an 18-4 record.

Tunkhannock had four of its wrestlers finished second, including Luke Carpenter (130), Brian Christ (145), Alex Dailey (185) and Harry Thrash (210).

Carpenter won by fall and a 2-1 decision to reach the finals, Christ won by 8-2 decision, Dailey won by pin and Thrash won by decision in the semifinals.

Also for Tunkhannock, Connor Elgin (110) and Jacob Baltrusaitis (122) earned fourth-place finishes, Matt Rosentel (85) finished fifth and Frank Scranta (165) took sixth.
