The Tunkhannock Area golf team braved some heavy rains to open its 2017 campaign with a solid showing at the Jerry Smith Memorial First Friday Invitational Friday at Towanda Country Club.
The Tigers finished third out of the nine teams represented on the links with 357 points and with all six of its starters shooting under 100 on the par-71 course.
Junior Tyler Faux led the way with an 83 and junior Dylan Mislevy shot an 87 to lead Tunkhannock.
Also for the Tigers, sophomores Coby Gilpin and Nick Budner shot 93 and 94, respectively, sophomore Cody Rondinella shot a 97 and junior Trae Cole rounded out the six with a 99.
Horseheads (New York) went undefeated for the day and was the top team with 337.
Warrior Run’s Vincent Bender had the best individual score on the course with a 4-over par.
Tunkhannock also had its last tune-up before the regular season kicks off Thursday at Coughlin in the Tryba Preseason Tournament at Fox Hill Country Club Monday.
Faux again led the Tigers with a 79, good for a tie in 11th place overall. Mislevy was tied for 19th with an 81.
Also for Tunkhannock, Budner finished with an 88, Rondinella shot a 94, Gilpin finished with a 99 and Cole shot 101.
The Tigers finished seventh out of 14 teams with 342 points, while Crestwood won the team title with 299 to claim its third tourney in four years.
Crestwood also became the second school in the 15 year history of the event to shoot under 300. Holy Redeemer did so four times in a row previously.
Comets’ senior Mike Golden led the field with a 72 to win the individual title.
