The Tunkhannock Area boys basketball team won its fifth game of the season and improved to 2-0 in Division 2 of the Wyoming Valley Conference after edging Holy Redeemer, 46-40, on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Tunkhannock Area High School.

The Tigers led 11-8 heading into the second quarter before the Royals battled back in the second, pulling to within 23-22 at halftime.

Tunkhannock extended its lead to two points after the third, then was able to hold on in the fourth for the win.

Junior Tyler Faux finished with a game-high 21 points, including seven of Tunkhannock’s 13 points in the decisive fourth quarter.

Senior Matt Goodwin chipped in three 3-pointers for nine points and senior Sean Harder finished with eight.

Tunkhannock entered Wednesday night’s game outscoring opponents 360-225 through six games and is hopeful to carry some momentum from the win into league play, something the Tigers were unable to do after facing Holy Redeemer early on last year.

In the game on Jan. 4, the Royals won 51-39 and moved on to win the district championship, while Tunkhannock went on to lose 10 of its remaining 15 games — including a seven game losing streak to close out the season — to finish at the bottom of Division 2.
