The list reads not only like a who’s who of senior Lackawanna League football players, but it could double as an honors list for the classroom.
The 15 players who have been selected as finalists for the 26th annual Fiore Cesare Award and Scholarship could fill volumes with their press clippings from on the field, but it is their high marks in the classroom as well that have put them on the ballot for the prestigious honor.
The Scranton Chapter of Officials presents the award in honor of Cesare, a standout high school football player with high character and outstanding academics who was the first commissioner of officials for the Scranton chapter.
The winner will be announced Dec. 29 at a 2 p.m. afternoon press conference at The Radisson Hotel.
Nominees are Lackawanna Trail lineman Shawn Jones; Abington Heights’ wide receiver/defensive back Chase Overholser; Delaware Valley quarterback/defensive back Dylan Kelly; Dunmore lineman Nick Shoemaker and tight end/linebacker Luke Yanisko; Lakeland quarterback/defensive back Nico Piraino; North Pocono running back/linebacker JC Gaughan; Old Forge running back/linebacker Brandon Mozeleski and lineman King Shakim Rose; Scranton running back/defensive back Rheyse Green; Scranton Prep receiver/defensive back Sam Dickson and running back Matt Gilmartin; Wallenpaupack fullback/linebacker Aiden Maldacker; West Scranton running back Andre Chollette; and Western Wayne defensive tackle/tight end Cole Fuller.
All finalists are seniors who were outstanding players this season.
Academic standards are set by the individual schools. Student-athletes must be planning post-graduation studies to be eligible.
Co-chairmen for this year’s award will be Jack Cesare and the 1995 Cesare Award recipient, Eric Miller.
